The Pebble Hug is a super chunky knit cowl worked in a simple textured stitch that gives it a soft, modern finish. It is a quick and satisfying project — a couple of evenings’ work and perfect if you want your first knitted accessory. In this video we knit the whole thing, from casting on to joining it in the round.
What you’ll be knitting
- Level: beginner. You only need to cast on, knit and purl, and bind off.
- Time: a couple of evenings in super chunky yarn.
- Finish: a flat piece joined into a loop with an invisible seam.
Materials
Super chunky yarn — see the natural yarn collection — circular needles in the size the label recommends, and a tapestry needle for seaming.
How it is knitted
- Cast on to the width you want the cowl to be.
- Work the textured stitch, repeating the sequence shown in the video until you reach the length you want.
- Check the length before joining: the cowl should go comfortably over your head and wrap once or twice.
- Bind off without pulling tight.
- Join the ends with a tapestry needle and weave in the tails on the wrong side.
Common mistakes
- Knitting too tightly. With super chunky yarn the fabric should stay soft. If it feels stiff, go up a needle size.
- A visible seam. Join the ends stitch by stitch, following the pattern, and the seam disappears.
- Too short. Measure it over your shoulders before joining — a short cowl pulls.
Frequently asked questions
How much yarn do I need?
In super chunky yarn, usually 2–3 skeins depending on the width and length you choose. Work it out from a small swatch.
Is it a good first project?
One of the best: no increases, no decreases, and chunky yarn shows progress almost immediately.
Can I knit it in the round from the start?
Yes, by casting on in the round and skipping the seam. In the video we knit it flat and join it afterwards.
