The Yohta Hat is a chunky knit hat with oversized colourful tassels: a very simple knitted base and a finish nobody misses. It is a quick project, perfect if you already knit and purl and want to make something with character. In the video we knit the whole thing — the base, the crown shaping, the tassels and how to space them so the hat sits evenly.
What you’ll be knitting
- Level: confident beginner. You need to cast on, knit and purl, decrease and bind off.
- Time: an afternoon. Chunky yarn grows fast.
- Finish: large tassels in contrasting colours, sewn onto the crown.
Materials
Chunky yarn — in the video we use BeMe by The Woolcatcher — plus one or two contrast colours for the tassels, circular needles, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle for sewing and weaving in.
How to make the tassels
- Wind the yarn many times around a piece of card as long as you want the tassel to be.
- Thread a strand through one end and tie it tightly — that strand is what you will later sew the tassel to the hat with.
- Cut the other end and tie a second strand around the bundle about 2 cm below the top to form the “head”.
- Trim the ends level. The denser the tassel, the better it hangs.
Common mistakes
- Attaching tassels with a single stitch. Pass the needle several times through the base of the tassel and the fabric — with that much weight, one stitch works loose.
- Uneven placement. Pin the positions before sewing and look at the hat on a head before you fasten off.
- Knitting too tightly. A tight hat won’t sit on the head. If in doubt, go up half a needle size.

How much yarn do I need for this hat?
In chunky yarn, an adult hat usually takes 1–2 skeins, plus scraps of other colours for the tassels. It’s a great project for using up leftovers.
Can I knit it as a beginner?
Yes, if you have knitted something flat before. If the basics are still new, start with our videos on casting on and 1x1 ribbing.
Can the tassels be removed?
If you sew them on with a long strand and a knot you can reach from the inside, yes — you can swap the colours or take them off before washing.
