Learn how to knit flowers: soft layered petals, a small centre and textured leaves. They are quick to make, perfect for using up leftover yarn, and they work as decoration on sweaters, hats, scarves and bags. In this video we knit them step by step and then sew them on.
What you’ll be knitting
- Petals in layers, to give the flower volume.
- A small centre in a contrast colour.
- Leaves with texture, optional.
How they go together
- Knit the pieces separately. Petals, centre and leaves are all worked individually.
- Shape the petals. Roll or overlap the layers depending on how much volume you want.
- Fix the centre. Sew the centre passing the needle through every layer — that is what holds the flower together.
- Fasten off on the back. Leave a long strand: that is what you sew the flower onto the garment with.
- Sew it on. Through the base of the flower and the strand of the fabric, never through the whole stitch.
Common mistakes
- Sewing too tightly. Pull hard and the fabric puckers around the flower. Sew without tensioning.
- A loose centre. If the flower opens up with wear, the centre isn’t passing through all the layers.
- A short strand. Always leave 20 cm — that strand is the seam.
Frequently asked questions
What yarn should I use for the flowers?
The same as the project, or scraps in other colours. Yarn finer than the garment gives more delicate flowers.
Can they be removed later?
Yes, if you sew them with a knot you can reach from the wrong side. You can then change colours or take them off to wash.
Do they work on other pieces?
Yes: hats, bags, scarves and cowls. On the Flower Pop sweater we scatter them over the body and sleeves.
