Flower Pop is an oversized sweater with knitted flowers: a relaxed fit, a soft stockinette body and small flowers scattered across the body and sleeves. In this video we knit the whole sweater and work through shaping the neckline and sleeves, then placing and sewing the flowers so they sit naturally.
What you’ll be knitting
- Silhouette: oversized, relaxed drape.
- Level: intermediate. Stockinette, neckline, sleeves and hand finishing.
- Detail: flowers knitted separately and sewn on — use as many or as few as you like.
Materials
Yarn — in the video we use BeMe by The Woolcatcher — plus scraps in other colours for the flowers, circular needles and a tapestry needle. Here is the natural yarn collection.
How the sweater is built
- Body in stockinette, with the relaxed width of an oversized fit.
- Neckline with decreases spread out for a clean finish.
- Sleeves with increases up to the final width.
- Flowers knitted separately — the step by step is in our how to knit the flowers video.
- Placement. Pin the flowers, look at the whole thing on the body, and only then sew.
Common mistakes
- Sewing the flowers too soon. Pin them and try the sweater on first — the distribution changes a lot on the body.
- Flowers too close together. Leave air between them; fewer, well-spaced flowers look better.
- Sewing straight through the stitch. Sew through the base of the flower and the strand of the fabric, not the whole stitch, so the sweater keeps its stretch.
Frequently asked questions
How many flowers do I need?
As many as you like. In the video we use a moderate, well-spread number — more flowers reads bolder, fewer reads quieter.
Can the flowers come off for washing?
Yes, if you sew them on with a long strand and a knot you can reach from the wrong side.
Do the same flowers work on other projects?
Yes — they look great on hats, bags and scarves. It is a good project for using up leftovers.
