Single crochet is one of the first stitches you learn and the most used in amigurumi. It makes a dense, firm fabric with no gaps — perfect for baskets, bags, toys and home décor. In this video we work it step by step.
How to crochet single crochet, step by step
- Insert the hook into the corresponding stitch of the previous row.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have two loops on the hook.
- Yarn over again and pull through both loops at once.
- Done: one loop remains on the hook and one single crochet is complete.
- At the end of a row, work one turning chain — it does not count as a stitch — and turn the work.
Common mistakes
- Losing stitches at the edges. The most common problem when working in rows: make sure you always work into the very last stitch.
- Counting the turning chain as a stitch. In single crochet it never counts.
- Uneven tension. If the fabric ruffles, you are probably adding stitches. Count at the end of every row.
Frequently asked questions
Is single crochet the same as UK double crochet?
Yes — the stitch called single crochet (sc) in US terms is double crochet (dc) in UK patterns. Always check which terminology a pattern uses.
Why is my fabric ruffling?
Because there are extra stitches. Count each row: on a rectangle the number must stay exactly the same.
Is it the stitch for amigurumi?
It is the amigurumi stitch. It is worked in a spiral from a magic ring, without joining the rounds.
